Manipulate the field with Morphield
MB Labs created the game Morphield for the 2012 Red Bull Creation’s Competition. It’s a 2-4 person game where players manipulate the fabric surface of the field to push a soccer ball towards their goal using Wii remotes. The remotes talk to a computer though an API that streams commands to 3 daisy-chained Arduino Megas that control an array of 135 solenoid valves in a 9×15 matrix. The individually addressable valves inflate an array of balloons underneath the fabric that stretch and morph the fabric field. Morphield was built with 135 balloons and solenoid actuators, 200 feet of pneumatic hose, 400 feet of wiring and over 1500 solder connections by a team of 4 in 72 hours.
